RTVE once again entrusts Telefónica with its Historical Archive update

Telefónica has been awarded the tender for updating the management platform of RTVE’s Documentary Collection archive.

The engineering project, to be implemented by Telefónica, encompasses the update of the Tedial content management system to Evolution, its latest version, as well as the renewal of the associated hardware platform and the update of the third-party systems integrated in the solution.

In 2011, the Media Management Systems associated with the RTVE Historical Archive were implemented in Prado del Rey, Torrespaña and Sant Cugat sites, using Tedial technology. Initially, the systems were designed and configured to digitalise and incorporate the entire RTVE historical archive into a file-based workflow. After eight years of operation and having digitalised a large part of the audiovisual material, the primary demand of the Documentary Collection system users has changed drastically, where content digitalisation has moved to the background and being used mainly to transfer contents from the Historical Collection to areas RTVE through various gateways.

Therefore, due to the time that has elapsed since the system was implemented (which has caused the hardware, operating systems and software versions used to become obsolete and/or unsupported) and to the evolution of RTVE’s own needs, certain workflows need to be modified and adapted to these current needs, including new functionalities such as archiving material in 4K format, adjusting the size to current volume and future growth, simplifying processes, etc. Tapes elimination in most environments as for example in the master control room, makes this even more important and requires more resources from different Historical Archive areas.

The system update will include a change in the philosophy of site architecture, going from the configuration of independent systems at each site, to a single centralised system in Prado del Rey, which will manage the Torrespaña, Prado del Rey and Sant Cugat sites. TSA will implement a virtualisation solution, on which the Tedial application package will be installed. Two virtualised environments will be deployed, one in Prado del Rey and another in Sant Cugat.

Also included in this update is the migration of the archive from Torrespaña to Prado del Rey, where the storage at both sites will be centralised, unifying the existing contents in their robotic systems. In addition, the solution proposed by TSA includes the replacement of the current storage used at Prado del Rey and Sant Cugat for the Isilon from EMC solution with All Flash technology that guarantees the best possible access to the archived contents.

In addition, and as a security measure against a “catastrophic” event occurring in Prado del Rey’s centralised system, a system will be provided for Tedial Databases automatic replication, which together with the physical sending of the backup tape with the contents to Sant Cugat, would guarantee the integrity of the RTVE Historical Archive.

To deploy this project, Telefónica has trusted as main technological partners in DELL-EMC virtualisation and centralized storage solution, in Telestream as transcoding platform and in those whose systems are already implemented in the system and require update and adjustment to the new platform (Marquis Broadcast, Oracle Diva, Tektronix and of course, Tedial).

The project also contemplates the provision of a support service for the platform maintenance over the 4 years following the commissioning of the new platform.
