Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales is leading the technological transformation of RTVE’s production centre in Sant Cugat with a system based on IP video and SMPTE 2110 standards, awarded as the best IP integration project at the TM Broadcast Awards.

Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA) is carrying out the comprehensive modernisation of the continuity system at RTVE’s production centre in Sant Cugat, a strategic project that marks a turning point in the public broadcaster’s operations. The transition from a traditional SDI infrastructure to an architecture based on IP technology, under SMPTE 2110 standards, enables RTVE to face the new challenges of the audiovisual environment with confidence.

IP video: a new way of understanding audiovisual broadcasting

The renewal of RTVE’s continuity system in Sant Cugat responds to a clear need: to adapt to new IP-based workflows in order to enhance operational efficiency, broadcasting flexibility and technical content quality. The new system allows for more dynamic management of audiovisual resources, reduces dependence on traditional physical infrastructure, and facilitates greater scalability for the future.

SMPTE 2110 standard: precision, synchronisation and flexibility for the IP audiovisual environment

At the heart of the project is the adoption of SMPTE 2110 standards, which enable the transport of video, audio and ancillary data over IP networks in a synchronised and precise manner. This migration not only represents a technical improvement, but a transformation of the broadcasting model, enabling smoother integration between production, continuity and control areas.

Among the project highlights is the replacement of the old SDI chain with redundant playout servers configured in 4+4 mode, capable of managing multiple channels simultaneously. In addition, new recording, shared storage, IP audio processing and graphics generation systems have been incorporated, all fully integrated with the automation system and the LAWO VSM orchestrator.

IP video network infrastructure: redundant, scalable and available

The new IP infrastructure is supported by a high-availability media network, built on Cisco’s IPFM (IP Fabric for Media) architecture, with a redundant topology on “red” and “blue” networks, and managed from a centralised platform. All this ensures safe, flexible and resilient operation, while also complying with EBU R-143 security recommendations.

In addition to expanding the media network, the control and storage networks have been optimised, along with the graphics, KVM and management systems, to ensure efficient connectivity between all critical audiovisual systems and devices.

TSA, leading audiovisual integrator in IP video environments

Another key aspect has been the comprehensive approach of the project. TSA is not only responsible for supplying and integrating the equipment, but also for the complete installation, configuration and commissioning of all systems. It also provides specialised training to RTVE’s technical and operational staff, ensuring an efficient transition to the new IP environment.

The modernisation of continuity in Sant Cugat marks a decisive step in RTVE’s digital transformation strategy and strengthens Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales’ position as a key player in the deployment of IP-based video infrastructures in Spain. With this project, RTVE not only enhances its current technical capabilities, but also prepares for continuous evolution in line with international trends in audiovisual production and distribution.
