Unlimited connectivity thanks to Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales and Starlink

News 21 May, 2024

Telefónica, through Telefónica Global Solutions, is among the select group of companies worldwide that have closed an agreement with Starlink to commercialize its solutions within the professional sphere. This commercialization is carried out in Spain, for companies, through Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales and began in the third quarter of 2023, representing an innovative response to the demands of global connectivity and overcoming traditional limitations associated with geostationary satellites.

Starlink represents the first operational constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites with broadband capabilities and an ongoing massive deployment. Currently, it has nearly 6,000 deployed satellites, with plans to reach a total of 12,000 in a second phase, and a possible future expansion to 42,000.

Its greatest achievement is to offer global coverage, across the planet, for both fixed services and terrestrial and maritime mobility solutions, thanks to its LEO satellite constellation. In addition, latency, considered an insurmountable barrier for many clients in satellite connections, becomes a thing of the past with Starlink.

Starlink is distinguished by download speeds exceeding 300 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40 Mbps, comparable to conventional broadband connections. To achieve this, Starlink has its own Ground Stations network, whose main function is to receive and transmit data signals between satellites and ground devices, such as user antennas. These ground stations are strategically located in different regions of the world to ensure effective global coverage and to optimize communication between satellites and end users, minimizing latency and maximizing connection speed. This coverage, combined with the large data throughput it allows to transport, redefines expectations in the field of satellite communications.

Starlink‘s basic equipment includes flat antennas with automatic or electronic pointing, Starlink WiFi routers, and power units, among other components. TSA offers an additional layer of services, including installation, maintenance, and 24/7 support, to maximize the value of the solution for its clients.

In commercial terms, it is essential to note that Starlink is only allowed to be commercialized through companies with direct distribution agreements. Currently, Telefónica positions itself as one of those authorized companies to offer Starlink in various countries, with plans to expand to more territories in the near future.

Since TSA began commercializing Starlink, the response has been overwhelming, with approximately 300 requests and around thirty active accesses to date, including prominent projects such as installation on an oil platform and implementation on Social Security ships, where the solution has been highly successful.

In this way, TSA provides an innovative response to the growing demands of its clients for reliable and high-speed internet access in areas where conventional options are limited. A significant milestone that demonstrates Telefónica’s commitment to global connectivity, maintaining its position as a leader in the provision of advanced communication solutions backed by the latest technology.
