A component video signal processes the luminance and chrominance signals on separate channels.

It is the separation into two components of the video signal; the luminance “light” and the chrominance “color”, differs in two types, digital and analog.

Analog: The video signal is composed of the luminance called Y and by two separate chrominance signals (U and V).

Digital: Composed of a signal of luminance (Y) and two of chrominance R-Y (green color minus luminance) and B-Y (blue color minus luminance).

This process is used in, for example, the analog components of the MII and Betacam formats and in most digital systems.
