TSA boosts the OTT video experience with the launch of O2 TV
Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA) has launched the headend for the Over The Top television service of O2 TV in Germany, delivering a robust and flexible infrastructure that ensures an exceptional user experience on its OTT platform.
Comprehensive OTT platform and advanced technology
TSA’s OTT platform covers the entire audiovisual flow, from signal reception to final distribution. In this end-to-end process, the first phase involves collaboration with MTI, a specialised German provider that receives signals through multiple technologies such as satellite, fibre, SRT and ZIXI. In this way, all contributions include backup systems that ensure both the quality and redundancy of each signal before processing.
Once the signals are received, TSA proceeds with encoding using high-density equipment configured in 9+2 redundancy. This system, capable of encoding between 20 and 25 services per unit, adapts each channel to the specific profiles required by O2. The process continues with packaging and integration of Telefónica’s management and encryption systems, thus completing a chain that ensures security and regulatory compliance.

The result of this technical architecture is a robust offering: more than 148 thematic channels covering sports, news, live events and children’s content, all accessible from any device. But the proposal goes beyond basic streaming, incorporating advanced features such as personal recording (NPVR) of up to 100 hours, seven-day catch-up, and startover and timeshift options that transform the viewing experience.
Over The Top: robust infrastructure for the digital future
To deliver this experience efficiently to end users, distribution is optimised through intelligent integration with the Content Delivery Network (CDN). This system not only balances traffic according to demand, but also adapts dynamically during audience peaks, maintaining service quality even at critical times.
System robustness relies on a transport infrastructure using four point-to-point fibres, strategically distributed across two geographically separate locations and configured in an active-active scheme. This geographical redundancy means that each fibre is capable of handling all inbound and outbound traffic, providing a safety net that guarantees the continuity of the Over The Top service.
Complementing this physical infrastructure, TSA has deployed video probes and monitoring systems that supervise every stage of the flow in real time. This constant oversight enables not only detailed stream control but also the proactive detection and resolution of any incidents before they affect the user experience.
This project consolidates TSA’s strong commitment to Over The Top solutions, demonstrating its ability to combine operational stability with technological adaptability. With this implementation, the company strengthens its international vocation, responding to the growing demands of an ever-evolving OTT platform ecosystem.
